Aviation safety: sensing what is happening now, working on it sincerely, and keeping at it

Since it was founded in 2001, Takumi Enterprise has been flying for more than 20 years. Along the way, a precautionary landing caused by a fuel shortage was classified as a serious incident, and it made us keenly aware that our pilot training had fallen short. A business improvement recommendation also gave us the chance to examine where our safety efforts were not enough.

Until 2018, when we received guidance following the serious incident and the business improvement recommendation, we were a small airline where staff held several jobs at once. Looking into these problems, we concluded that ensuring safety requires many capable people, and today we work with several times as many staff as we had then. As our team grew, Takumi Enterprise grew into an operator with many flight hours, gained rich flying experience, and strengthened the maintenance skills needed to deal with problems.

In May 2024, for the first time in our history, an event was classified as an aircraft accident. Our 20-year record without an accident came to an end. We had been operating with great care, so why? Feeling the frustration of not knowing the cause, we reviewed our safety measures and learned a great deal. Later, the Japan Transport Safety Board's accident investigation report concluded that the engine had most likely stopped because a part inside it, not machined correctly when it was made, had broken. The report did not point to any problem with our maintenance or operations. Even so, the review became a chance to raise our safety measures one level higher. Since that accident, we have strengthened our safety measures further, with particular focus on whether the rules we set are being followed.

In January 2026, another accident occurred. No problem with our safety measures has been found. It happened even so, and its cause is still unknown. However many measures are in place, accidents can still happen. Accepting this, we reviewed our safety measures once again. This may be true of every transport business: looking only inward does not make safety complete. At the same time, what rules cannot fully cover can only be carried out through relationships of trust. What does safety truly mean? We have come to learn about the scope of safety from a philosophical side as well.

The cause of the 2026 accident has not yet been determined, and the passengers in our care and our pilot have still not come home. For a company whose work is rescue and search, this continues to be a very painful time.

As our organisation has grown, our responsibility to society has become greater than ever. We will widen our view further and work on safety from even more sides. Together, all of our staff will face safety sincerely and keep striving to establish it.
