How many minutes earlier can you see the first sunrise of the year from the sky?

Start the year with a spectacular view. On New Year's Day the morning air is clear, and the sun seen from above looks even more like a true "first sunrise". A view you can only see once a year, from up in the sky. And in the sky, the sun rises with a little head start.

At 1,500 m (about 5,000 ft) above the ground, the first sunrise starts to appear about 6 minutes earlier than on the ground. Thanks to this gap, you can treat yourself to seeing it twice: watch the first sunrise in the sky, land, and then watch it once more. Where the sea lies to the east, it is hard to land in the few minutes before sunrise on the ground, so the second one is a bonus if it works out. But at Kyoto Heliport, with mountains to the east, we can land while the sun is still behind them, so the second sunrise is certain. To be at the right height and position at that time, however, we need to take off at least 30 minutes before sunrise on the ground.

Altitude and sunrise time

We worked it out for the sky over Kyoto on 1 January 2027. We have flown first-sunrise flights in Kyoto several times before.

The sun rises in the east-southeast (about 30 degrees south of due east). The calculation assumes a flat horizon with no mountains in that direction. Kyoto has mountains to the east, so on the ground the sun appears even later. Thanks to the mountains, the gap between the ground and the sky only grows.

Kyoto's first-sunrise flight: two first sunrises in one day

A real flight goes roughly like this. Times are approximate.

Around 6:35: take-off. While the world is still asleep, we quietly rise into the sky. The eastern sky begins to lighten, and the streets of Kyoto slowly emerge from the dark. On New Year's morning the air is clear, and the city looks amazingly sharp.
Just before 7:00: the first sunrise in the sky. The sun peeks out over the mountains to the east, a little earlier than on the ground. You get to say "Happy New Year" a step ahead of everyone below.
Land, and see it again on the ground. The sun you saw from the sky is still hidden behind the mountains to the east when seen from the ground. After landing, you can welcome it once more as it appears from behind the mountains. At Kyoto Heliport, this is certain. Two first sunrises to start the year. Maybe twice the good luck, too.

The further north, the bigger the bonus

Even at the same 5,000 ft, how much earlier you see the sun differs a little from place to place. In winter, the further north you are, the more slowly and slantingly the sun rises. So the height you gain turns into more extra time. It's a nice little rule: the colder the place, the bigger the bonus.

All figures are rough estimates for 1 January 2027, assuming a flat horizon.

Why you see it earlier from higher up

Because the Earth is round. That's all. ...Well, that's a bit dry, so here is a little more.

The higher you go, the lower the horizon drops, and the further beyond it you can see. At 5,000 ft, the horizon looks about 1 degree lower than from the ground. The sun that is still below the horizon for people on the ground is already visible from the sky. In other words, only the people in the sky get to see a little way into the future.

On New Year's Day in Kyoto, the rising sun climbs about 0.18 degrees a minute. If the horizon drops by about 1.1 degrees, 1.1 ÷ 0.18 means you see it about 6 minutes earlier.

For the curious: the maths

Dip of the horizon: dip (arcminutes) ≈ 1.76 × √height (m). 1.76 × √1,500 ≈ 68 arcminutes ≈ 1.14°. This rule of thumb includes atmospheric refraction (without refraction it would be about 1.24°).
    速さ(度/時)= 15 × cos(緯度)× cos(赤緯)× sin(時角)
日の出の時角は cos(時角)= −tan(緯度)× tan(赤緯)から約72.7度。
How fast the sun climbs at sunrise: rate (°/hour) = 15 × cos(latitude) × cos(declination) × sin(hour angle). Kyoto is at 35.0° N, and the sun's declination on New Year's Day is −23.0°. From cos(hour angle) = −tan(latitude) × tan(declination), the hour angle at sunrise is about 72.7°. 15 × 0.819 × 0.921 × 0.955 ≈ 10.8°/hour ≈ 0.18°/minute. The further north you are, the smaller cos(latitude) becomes and the more slowly the sun rises. That is why northern areas get a bigger "bonus".
How much earlier: 1.14 ÷ 0.18 ≈ 6.3 minutes → about 6 minutes
Bonus: how fast to descend to keep the sun on the horizon: the dip grows with the square root of height, so at 1,500 m it changes by about 0.023 arcminutes per metre. To match 0.18°/minute (10.8 arcminutes/minute), you need to descend about 475 m (about 1,560 ft) a minute. This is the "about 1,500 ft" mentioned below in "a sunrise that keeps going".

A view only the sky can give: a sunrise that keeps going

Our pilots have a little technique they really use. If you slowly descend from the moment the sun starts to appear, the sun stays right on the edge of the horizon. On the ground, the moment of sunrise is over in an instant, but in the sky it lasts for several minutes. From 5,000 ft down to near the ground, the calculation gives up to about 6 minutes. It's sunrise in extra time, something you can't see on the ground.

To keep the sun right on the edge, though, you have to descend in step with how fast the sun rises. Starting from 5,000 ft, you first come down at about 1,500 ft (about 460 m) a minute, which is quite fast. On real flights, we put a descent that feels comfortable for passengers first, and usually let you enjoy the view of the sun slowly rising. Please leave the way we fly to the captain.

Why we take off 30 minutes early

Because the sun won't wait for us. We need to be at the right height and facing the right direction when it first appears. Allowing time to climb and get into position, we want to take off at least 30 minutes before sunrise on the ground.

Under the law, taking off before sunrise counts as "night flight". The helicopter, the pilot and the take-off and landing site must all be able to handle night flying, and at some airports it also depends on what time they open in the morning. We check these conditions for each departure point before we offer a flight.

To be honest: the hard parts of a first-sunrise flight

We've written about all the good things, so here are the hard parts too, with nothing hidden.

By the way, the staff looking after you are sleepy and cold too. And no drinks for us on New Year's Eve! The hardships never end.

But our guests' smiles after the first sunrise make the best start to the year for us, too. We will have warm drinks ready for you before and after the flight.

天気についてAbout the weather

The first sunrise depends on the clouds in the eastern sky. Even though we fly in the sky, there is nothing we can do about that. Depending on how low the clouds are and the visibility, we may not be able to fly, or we may fly and still not see the sun. The captain decides whether to fly after checking the weather on the day.
