Skydiving from a helicopter: carrying people to the doorway of the sky
Most people picture skydivers jumping out of a small aeroplane. We fly them up in a helicopter.
We support two skydiving centres in the Kanto region with helicopter flights: Skydive Fujioka at Watarase Retarding Basin in Tochigi, and AZUL in Chikusei, Ibaraki. New plans in other places are also under way.
Jumping from a helicopter
Almost all skydiving is done from aeroplanes. Jumping from a helicopter is unusual even outside Japan.
A helicopter has its own advantages. It needs no long runway, so it can take off right next to the landing area. It can fly with just a few people on board. And jumpers can leave it at a lower speed than an aeroplane.
What we are responsible for
Each skydiving centre runs its own operation, parachutes and instructors. Our part is the helicopter flight: taking skydivers safely up to the agreed altitude.
We use helicopters from the AS350 family. We fly with the doors removed, and jumpers step out into the sky from the open doorway.
Up, out, and back down
Board. The skydivers get on the helicopter. Tandem jumpers (paired with an instructor) board together from here.
Climb. The helicopter climbs to the agreed altitude into the wind, the most efficient way to gain height. Depending on the type, it climbs at about 60 knots (around 110 km/h).
Jump. On the signal, the jumpers leave one group at a time. Even then, the helicopter is moving at about 60 knots. You might think it would be easier if the helicopter stood still, but skydivers need airflow to control their bodies, so they jump while it is moving. Still, they leave at a lower speed than from an aeroplane, which only a helicopter can offer.
Return. While the skydivers come down under their parachutes, the helicopter heads back first to get ready for the next group.
What skydiving flights mean for our pilots
A skydiving flight repeats climbs and descents many times in a short time. It uses the helicopter's power to the full, so it sharpens a pilot's skills. What our pilots learn here carries over to demanding work such as carrying loads to mountain huts and search operations.
これからWhat's next
On top of our two centres in Kanto, we are planning skydiving in a new location. We will announce it on this site once it is decided.
