What is heli-skiing? Heli-skiing in Japan today
A quick helicopter hop to a mountaintop with no lifts or gondolas. From there, you ride down untouched snow, with no one else around. It is the dream of every skier and snowboarder: heli-skiing.
Almost all heli-skiing in Japan is flown by our helicopters. Today, you can heli-ski in Japan at Mt Shiribetsu in Hokkaido and in Hakuba, Nagano. In this article, we describe heli-skiing in Japan today, as seen by those who fly the helicopter.
What is heli-skiing?
A helicopter takes you to the top of a mountain, and you ski natural slopes outside the ski resort. When you reach the bottom, the helicopter is waiting again. Board, get off, ski, and board again. You repeat this many times a day.
No time spent queuing for lifts. No groomers have been there. All that is on the slope is the snow that fell overnight and your own tracks.
Because you ski in the mountains, a mountain guide always comes with you. Which slopes, in what order, and how to ski them: the guide decides after checking the snow. Your job is to follow the guide and enjoy yourself to the full.
Why the world comes for Japan's snow
In winter, cold winds from Siberia cross the Sea of Japan and drop huge amounts of snow on Japan. Because it is so cold, the snow is light and dry. This is Japan's powder snow, which skiers around the world call "JAPOW".
Every winter, people from all over the world come to Niseko and Hakuba for this snow. Heli-skiing is the most luxurious way to enjoy the very best of it.
Where you can heli-ski in Japan
Mt Shiribetsu, Hokkaido
This mountain rises near Niseko, next to Mt Yotei, known as the "Fuji of Ezo". We have flown heli-skiing helicopters here for more than five years. The slopes are challenging and suited to experts. Bookings are handled by the local guide company, Hokkaido Backcountry Club.
Hakuba, Nagano
In Hakuba, a world-famous ski resort at the foot of the Northern Alps, we have run heli-skiing in recent years while carrying out trials. We land only at approved landing points, including some inside the national park. Anywhere in the Hakuba mountains is about 15 minutes away, one way.
A day of heli-skiing
Meet and safety briefing. The guide shows you how to use avalanche safety gear and explains the rules for getting on and off the helicopter. The rotors keep turning, so there are rules for how to approach. Please listen carefully.
Flight. You are at the top in no time. Out of the window are the peaks you were looking up at a moment ago. By now, you already feel it was worth the money.
Ski. When the helicopter flies off, it suddenly goes quiet. All you can hear is the wind and your own breathing. On the guide's signal, you set off.
Board again. The helicopter is waiting at the bottom. You repeat this as long as the weather, the snow and your legs allow.
What heli-skiing means to us, the people who fly
Heli-skiing is our flagship winter work. Beyond giving our guests a great time, it matters to our company in several ways.
Flying in the mountains all year round
In summer, our helicopters carry supplies to mountain huts in the Northern Alps. But summer work alone cannot support the helicopters, pilots and engineers all year. Heli-skiing in winter lets the same helicopters keep flying in the mountains all year round. Your fun in winter helps keep the mountain huts supplied in summer.
Where pilots sharpen their skills
Landing on a snowy ridge is one of the harder things in helicopter flying. White snow makes it hard to judge the distance to the ground, and mountain winds are unpredictable. Flying in the winter mountains every day sharpens and keeps up a pilot's skills. Those skills carry straight over to mountain rescue and search.
Working hand in hand with guides
A helicopter company cannot run heli-skiing alone. Mountain guides choose the slopes, prepare for avalanches and bring guests safely to the bottom. We take care of the sky, and the guides take care of the snow. In Hokkaido, we have worked this way with the local guide company.
Respecting the mountains and local communities
Heli-skiing means using the mountains with permission. Our landing points in Hakuba were approved after many discussions with the local village and the national park. To protect the plants, we only use them when snow has built up. In other words, we only land on snow.
これからWhat's next
On top of Hokkaido and Hakuba, we want to bring heli-skiing to more snowy mountains, including Tohoku. We are also working on more landing places, and on heli-skiing that is a little easier to enjoy, not only for experts. Our goal is to share Japan's snow in a way the country can be proud of.
For those who do not ski, we are also preparing sightseeing flights over the winter Northern Alps.
To be honest: the hard parts of heli-skiing
It all depends on the weather. We cannot fly on days with low cloud or strong wind. Mountain weather is unpredictable, and neither the helicopter nor the guide can change that. The captain and the guide decide whether to fly.
Many slopes are for advanced skiers. Mt Shiribetsu in particular is for experts. Natural slopes have no grooming and no course ropes. Please ask the guide company beforehand whether it suits your level.
No time to rest (a luxury problem). The skiing is fun, but this is the backcountry. It is a tough, breathless environment, far harder than a fully managed ski resort. At a resort, even after a tiring run, you can sit and rest on the lift. But with heli-skiing, three minutes after you reach the bottom, you are back on the summit hearing "Right, let's go." Honestly, that is hard. It is the moment I realise, yes, I'm getting old.
The helicopter may go to help people. When someone is lost or has an accident in the winter mountains, a nearby helicopter may go to rescue or search. On those days, you may get fewer runs. We ask for your understanding, in the spirit of everyone who plays in the mountains looking out for each other.
Even so, standing on the quiet summit after the helicopter has gone, most people wear a look that says "I'm glad I came." That look is what we fly for, too.
