Tips for great photos from a helicopter: one simple trick to get rid of window reflections
You get home from your sightseeing flight, look through your photos, and there is a faint image of your own face and phone over the view... It happens to almost everyone in a helicopter. But a small trick can change your photos completely.
The most effective thing is to bring your phone or camera right up close to the window. With no gap between the window and the lens, there is no room for reflections. Wear dark clothes as well, and you're all set.
The one trick: get close to the window
Reflections are bright things inside the cabin (your clothes, your hands, your phone screen, the person next to you) bouncing off the window glass. The closer the lens is to the window, the less room there is for reflections to get in.
Bring the lens right up to the window. Pointing it straight at the window cuts reflections the most.
But don't press it flat against the glass. A helicopter is always vibrating slightly. If the lens touches the window, the vibration goes straight into your photo and blurs it. The trick is to keep it just a little away.
Shade the lens with your hand. Cupping your hand around the lens keeps out stray light, for an even cleaner shot.
Wear dark clothes
White shirts and bright colours show up clearly in the window. Dark clothes, such as black or navy, hardly show even if they do reflect. If you are flying to take photos, wear at least a dark jacket. It is a small thing, but it works wonders.
Just three phone settings
Always turn the flash off. The light bounces off the window and your photo comes out completely white. It also gets in the way of flying the helicopter, so this one is a must.
Try video too. It is harder to get wrong than photos, and you can pick out your favourite moments later.
Focus on the view. If your phone focuses on marks or water drops on the window, lightly tap the part of the screen that shows the view.
Your side of the cabin decides your photos
The view is completely different from the left and right windows. If there is something you want to see or photograph, it is best to tell us when you book. On some routes, the side with the view switches between the way out and the way back, so you can take turns at the window.
Don't take too many photos
As a former photographer, this may be what I most want to say. A great many people spend the flight looking at the view through a screen, and then it's over.
My advice: take all the shots you want in the first few minutes, then put your phone down. The view you see with your own eyes stays with you more beautifully than any photo. Photos are for looking back on later. The view is only there now.
To be honest: what's hard about taking photos
The windows are not always spotless. We clean them every day, but small marks or water drops can appear during the flight.
The view goes by in a flash. By the time you think "I'll take that", it's already behind you. If there is something you want to shoot, have your camera ready before you get close.
The windows don't open. Shooting with the window open needs a special photography flight, so please ask us about it.
